Corundum is a rock-forming mineral found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. It is an aluminium oxide with a hexagonal crystal structure.  It is a very hard mineral commonly cut into gemstones and can be a wide variety of colours. It is also the mineral of ruby and sapphire.  Some of the richest deposits occur in India, Myanmar, Russia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
