CLEONICERAS AMMONITES FROM MADAGASCAR
Ammonites are a group of extinct molluscs which resembled a shelled squid when alive. They first appeared on the fossil record 240 million years ago in the Triassic Period and died out 65 milliion years ago with the dinosaurs during the Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction Event.
These are members of the Cleoniceras species of ammonites. This ammonite dates back to the Cretaceous Period so is 120 million years old and was originally found in the jungles of Mahajanga on the North West Coast of Madagascar.
When the ammonite creature died the bodies sank into the seabed sediment and over time the many sediment layers hardened into rock preserving the fossils within. During this time bacteria decomposed the ammonite bodies. Some minerals seeped into the ammonite remains leading to mineral replacements and ornately coloured interiors. The rock was then either naturally eroded or excavated by humans to expose the fossils.
This fossil has been carefully hand polished to reveal its rich golden brown and cream calcite replacements and impressive fern-like structure. These replacements occurred over a very long period of fossilisation where water dissolved the original hard parts of the ammonite shell and replace it with mineral matter.
